MSP50.2

MSP50.2

This segment covers the period from 5 April 2024 to 5 July 2024, the Bryant plot is available at: http://jsocwiki.rl.ac.uk/attachment/wiki/WikiStart/bryant_msp_v5010_Dayside_2024.pdf

Baseline telemetry is 140%.

On SC2 only FGM, PEACE and WEC are planned to be switched on after the eclipse season.

The period includes part of the ‘Short Eclipses’ in February - May 2024 when all instruments will be switched off.

The ESOC's dates for the payload to be off during the Short Eclipse season are:

  • C2 01/02/2024 04:00 - 24/05/2024 04:00
  • C1 19/02/2024 20:00 - 03/05/2024 14:00
  • C34 26/02/2024 18:00 - 06/04/2024 14:00

There will be manoeuvres on SC3 in Spring 2024, on 09/04/2024, 11/04/2024, 18-20/04/2024 and 28/04/2024, the manoeuvres' timetable is available here http://jsocwiki.rl.ac.uk/attachment/wiki/WikiStart/manoeuvres_sep2023_apr2024.pdf. In April 2024 payload on SC3 will be in manouvre mode not collecting any science data for a long period covering two manoeuvres, from 18/04/2024 05:45 until 20/04/2024 19:06. he along-orbit shift after the manoeuvres will be minimal.

Cluster crosses the predicted bow shock until: SC34 - 24/05/2024, SC1 - 28/05/2024, SC2 - 31/05/2024.

Cluster crosses the predicted magnetopause until: C34 - 01/07/2024, SC1 - 03/07/2024, SC2 - 08/07/2024.

The main science targets are conjunctions between Cluster and MMS and/or THEMIS at the magnetopause, bow shock and inside the magnetosheath, and auroral acceleration region in the southern hemisphere.

This segment does not have single-SC BM2 operations.

MSP50.2 was updated on 05/03/2024 with slight changes for two BM2 modes which were moved by 30/20 minutes to target better Northern AAR with combination with WBD PV observations. Affected dates are 12/05/2024, orbit 3781, and 21/05/2024, orbit 3785. The table presented in MSP50p2-4SC_BM2_draft_v2.pdf reflects the changes.
