This segment covers the period from 5 July 2024 to 30 September 2024 (end of the science operations) and covers part of the Nightside 2024 season, the Bryant plot is available at: http://jsocwiki.rl.ac.uk/attachment/wiki/WikiStart/bryant_msp_v5000_Tail_2024.pdf.

This segment includes SC2 re-entering date (8 September 2024 18:00 UT) and science planning after 8th of September 2024 will be only for SC134.

It is agreed that on SC2 planning will be based on the assumption that some payload on SC2 will be ON (FGM, PEACE, WEC) but this might not be the case.

Baseline telemetry is 140% over the whole segment and it is variable between PPs with a range 113%-150%.

The segment includes a season of ‘Long Eclipses’ in September - November 2024 when all instruments will be switched off. The ESOC's dates for the payload to be off during the Long Eclipse season are:

  • SC34 17/09/2024 00:00 - 28/09/2024 00:00
  • SC1 01/10/2024 00:00 - after end of science operations

There will be moon eclipses on SC34 in September 2024, the eclipse time is 02/09/2024 17:12 - 02/09/2024 18:46. The payload on SC34 will be fully switched off during 02/09/2024 00:00 - 03/09/2024 00:00.

There will be re-entry manoeuvres on SC1 on 03/08/2024 and 10/08/2024, all payload to be switched off for these manoeuvres, timetable is available here http://jsocwiki.rl.ac.uk/attachment/wiki/WikiStart/manoeuvres_aug2024_C1.pdf.

Cluster crosses the predicted magnetopause until: SC34 - 01/07/2024, SC1 - 03/07/2024, SC2 - 08/07/2024.

Cluster crosses the predicted neutral sheet from: SC34 - 01/08/2024, and there are no predicted NS crossings on SC12.

The main science targets are conjunctions between Cluster and MMS and/or THEMIS in the plasma sheet, and auroral acceleration region in the northern hemisphere.

The MSP50.3 was updated on 06/06/2024 to accommodate SC2 WEC switch-off around perigee (-15min/+30min) - Single Operations SC2 BM2 modes were changed from PP1226. Changes reflected in MSP50p3_singleSC_Bm2_v2.pdf and MSP50p3_byorbit_draft_v2.pdf tables.

The MSP50.3 was updated on 07/06/2024 to accommodate ESOC's schedules for the manoeuvres on SC1, Moon eclipse on SC34 and Earth eclipses. Changes reflected in the tables/files updated on 07/06/2024.

The MSP50.3 was updated on 13/06/2024 to accommodate an increased WEC off window on SC2 (-/+1h near perigee) - Single SC Operations SC2 BM2 modes were changed from PP1227. Changes reflected in MSP50p3_singleSC_Bm2_v4.pdf and MSP50p3_byorbit_draft_v4.pdf tables.

The MSP50.3 was updated on 20/06/2024 with a few small changes in four-spacecraft BM1 mode to better fit with some instruments being switched off around perigee on SC1 and SC2, changes are from PP1228, in orbits 3820, 3821, 3822, 3826 and 3827. Changes are reflected in MSP50p3-4SC_BM1_draft_v2.pdf and MSP50p3_byorbit_draft_v5.pdf.

The MSP50.3 was updated on 08/08/2024 with changed allocation of BM1 intervals from orbit 3840 (affected PPs are PP1235 and PP1236) to correspond to SC1 orbit changes after August 2024 manoeuvres. Changes are reflected in the tables shown in MSP50p3-4SC_BM1_draft_v3.pdf, MSP50p3_byorbit_draft_v6.pdf and MSP50p3_singleSC_Bm1_v2.pdf.
