50 | | This MSP covers the period from 26 May to 2 December 2018. It includes a season of 'Long Eclipses' in early September, when all the instruments will be switched off. There are manoeuvres during this period, and a list is included here http://jsocwiki.rl.ac.uk/attachment/wiki/WikiStart/manoeuvres_may-oct2018-v1.pdf. The magnetopause is accessible at the start of MSP39 and at the very end, and the neutral sheet will be accessible for most of the MSP. |
The Bryant plot for this period, covering 26 May to 2 December 2018 (orbits 2819 - 2902), is on JSOCweb http://www.jsoc.rl.ac.uk/msp/bryant_msp_v3900_07_17.pdf. The peroid includes a season of 'Long Eclipses' in early September, when all the instruments will be switched off. Two segments have been defined for the period prior to the eclipses:
* MSP 39.1 covers orbits 2819 to 2846 (26 May to 28 July)
* MSP 39.2 will cover orbits 2847 to 2862 (28 July to the start of the long eclipses on 1 September)
* Additional segments will be defined in due course for the period after the long eclipses

There will also be "moon eclipses" on 8 November 2018. On that day each spacecraft will spend about one hour passing through the Moon's shadow. Thus we expect that science operations will cease for several hours around these eclipses, due to lack of power. These eclipses will take place when the Cluster spacecraft are around 100000 km from Earth (mainly in the GSE +Y direction), so are not associated with eclipses seen from Earth.
